Differences Between 2019 Chevrolet Traverse & 2019 Honda Pilot

Serving Columbus, OH, Louisville, KY, and Springfield, OH

The Chevrolet Traverse has never been considered a luxury three-row by any stretch of the imagination, but imagination aside, drivers want functionality, a huge, airy cabin for passengers, clever utility engineering, and plenty of horsepower. A big machine such as the Traverse won't handle as well as the smaller crossovers, but that's not the point. Getting a big load of cargo from one place to another is the priority, and if the passengers are enjoying a nicely designed interior and lots of convenience features, the trip is even more pleasurable.

The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse goes up against the Honda Pilot, a well-designed model that offers a good list of standard features regardless of trim level. However, be prepared to pay thousands more for the 2019 Pilot than what is asked for to get the keys to a Traverse. The Pilot is big, but its interior isn't as well laid out, and it lags a bit behind in the horsepower department as well. Buyers should definitely check out the 2019 Traverse before settling on the more expensive Pilot, and below we will outline why.

Design

Everything about the Traverse is mammoth-scale. The cabin is large and airy, and the rear seating area actually accommodates adults with ease. There's plenty of headroom and legroom in all of the seating areas, and if captain's chairs are chosen for the second row, even more space opens up. The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse is absolutely full of pockets, cup-holders, and bins. The cargo space increases dramatically when the rear seats are folded, and the deep well can handle tall items. The LT Leather trim is quite appealing. For an affordable price, one gets leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, 4G LTE connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 7-inch MyLink infotainment screen. The 2019 Honda Pilot is large on the inside, but the rear seating area is a bit cramped, and access to this row is quite narrow. Also, one must purchase the expensive EX-L trim in order to get a large screen display. For many buyers, it isn't worth the extra cost.

PowerTrain

All 2019 Chevrolet Traverse trims except the RS version are powered by a 3.6L V6 rated at 310 horsepower. That's a 29-horsepower increase over last year's offering, and it's thanks to a lighter body and frame. The engine is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available. Some buyers are not thrilled with the nine-speed transmissions they have operated, but the Traverse has a very nicely engineered gear ratio spread, and acceleration is smooth and without hiccups. The RS version gets a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine that produces a total of 257 horsepower. The 2019 Honda Pilot is powered by a 3.5L V6, but the horsepower output is sub par for such a large engine. The Pilot is rated at 280 horsepower, and there's less torque than what one enjoys on the Chevrolet Traverse.

Value

The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse is offered in a total of seven trims, and all of them are priced less than the corresponding trim on the Honda Pilot. While it's true that the base model Pilot offers a few more standard features than the Traverse, the uplevel versions get quite pricy even though most of the added features are not exactly the most desirable. For example, one pays a lot for the Pilot EX-L trim, but the most significant add-ons are rear-seat window sunshades, a universal garage door opener, and leather upholstery. Many buyers are looking for advanced safety systems when they shell out additional dollars, and this makes the Traverse a better choice when the mid-level trims are considered.
