Differences Between 2019 Chevrolet Traverse & 2019 Ford Explorer

Serving Columbus, OH, Louisville, KY, and Springfield, OH

When considering a big three-row SUV, the priorities should be cabin volume, passenger comfort, and drivability. Most of these models get acceptable gas mileage, but some are easier to handle than others. A ponderous, heavy-feeling SUV won't excite the driver or exude confidence, but thankfully, the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse doesn't have these problems. This is an exceptional choice for those who really need the room behind the front seating area, require lots of cargo space, and enjoy having the whole family ride in comfort.

The 2019 Ford Explorer hasn't received much of an upgrade since this generation was introduced years ago. It handles well, and it comes with most of the desired safety features, but it doesn't match the Traverse's top scores for cargo volume. It also lags a bit behind in the high-tech department. Both models should be test-driven so that an informed buying choice can be made, but it's likely that the Traverse will get the nod.

Passenger Comfort

Chevrolet doesn't skimp on passenger comfort and cabin spaciousness on its big Traverse model. This is indeed a huge vehicle, and passengers will be able to stretch out and relax in the second- and third-row seating areas. Cargo volume is impressive. With the rear seats down, there's plenty of room for packages, backpacks, tents, or whatever else the driver needs to get from Point A to Point B. Despite the tall design, the Traverse is entered with ease thanks to big doors and a low step-up from the ground. The LS and LT Cloth trims boast a cargo management system, soft-touch upholstery, and available second-row seating tablet mounts. Captain's chairs are standard on the LT Cloth version, and this really opens up room for passengers. The 2019 Ford Explorer is rather big on the inside, but the focus here is on the front seating and center row passenger seating. Rear seating is very tight. Step-down from the second row of seats is awkward.

Interior

The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse base model doesn't skimp on the high-tech features. Standard on this trim are a rearview camera, OnStar communications, 4G LTE connectivity, an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, and the MyLink touchscreen infotainment system. Smartphone app integration is also included. The LT Cloth is eligible for a slew of driver assist aids including rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. This and the uplevel trims also come with an upgraded infotainment system and larger screen display either as an option or as standard equipment. The 2019 Ford Explorer base and XLT trims don't offer much in the way of standard high-tech. A rearview camera, the Ford Sync system, and satellite radio are about all that's included. The top-level Platinum trim must be chosen in order to get all of the high-tech features as standard, and sadly, the Explorer doesn't even offer forward collision warning.

Utility

If cargo capacity and ease of loading and organizing stuff is a priority, one can't do better than the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse. The cargo area has a deep well, and the cargo management system is cleverly designed. Cubbies and cupholders are everywhere. There's plenty of space for child safety seats and water bottles, and the huge door pockets are a real plus. Unlike the 2019 Explorer, the Traverse makes sensible use of the spacious cabin. The Explorer doesn't quite match the Traverse in terms of cargo volume, especially when the rear seats are still upright.

The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse is a big, functional, easy-to-drive, and safe vehicle that should be on your short list if you need a family hauler. Check out this year's model today at Jeff Wyler Chevrolet, and call ahead to schedule a test drive to see how it compares to the Ford Explorer.
